Course description:
During this course the students will be taught basic rendering principles while working with either Vray for Rhinoceros or Twinmotion rendering engines. While the course is aimed at increasing the technical execution level of the students, a certain amount of lecture time will also be spent explaining basic composition principles and color theory.
The students will work individually on their own 3D models (from their 2nd or 3rd year studio projects) and will produce 3 aesthetic and visually appealing visuals. If the students do not have a single 3D model, they will be able to download a base file on which they will work.

Workflow breakdown:

  1. Choose a movie that you find most aesthetic and pick out a scene from that movie.
  2. Analyze that scene: light composition, color comp, form comp,  camera positioning, depth perception, etc. Do not just write down what’s right in front of you, but try to be analytic about it. Why were those colors/tones chosen, why was that light chosen, why does the camera frame the view the way it does, and so on.

  3. By using your analysis and the movie scene as two reference points, reconstruct the same aesthetic within your own project. Create 1 exterior, 1 interior and 1 free-composition render.
  4. Combine the final PDF and send it in.

Deliverables:

  • Single PDF named LASTNAME_FIRSTNAME.pdf uploaded to Canvas. The pdf will contain:
    • First page – your selected movie title (top center, small letters), your name (bottom center, small letters) and a single (full page) screen-grab image of the scene that was analyzed and used as reference. 1920×1080 or 2592×1080 pixel size.
    • Second page – Interior render. 1920×1080 or 2592×1080 pixel size. Full page. No text. No additional graphics.
    • Third page – Exterior render. 1920×1080 or 2592×1080 pixel size. Full page. No text. No additional graphics.
    • Fourth page – Free-form render. 1920×1080 or 2592×1080 pixel size. Full page. No text. No additional graphics.

The deadline for PDF upload is March 10th, Sunday 17:00 (Sharp). If the deadline is missed, the credits will not be issued.

Note: There will be no public review, the course Pass/Fail evaluation together with credits are going to be issued in respect to the hand-in PDF requirement fulfillment as well as the quality at which the requirements have been fulfilled. If you would prefer to have your project evaluated by course teachers, write an e-mail to gediminas.kirdeikis@arkitektur.lth.se within one week after submission. You will receive an official evaluation PDF grading each aspect of the project from 0 to 10 together with free-form notes.
